SUMMARY:Grow A Garden Workshop Series: In-Ground Gardening
DESCRIPTION:LEARN HOW TO GROW A NEW IN-GROUND GARDEN\n\n\n\nKPB recently got lots of seeds donated through a program sponsored by the Keep Georgia Beautiful Foundation\, Home Depot\, and Ferry Morse Seeds.  We are now offering a new educational series to teach you how to grow your own food\, with information on soil choices\, composting\, fertilizing\, plant choice\, container options\, and more.  We are applying for grants to fund this program\, so as funds are available\, we will provide all the materials for your new garden!  You’ll go home with the containers\, soil\, seeds\, and more to begin growing your own fresh food. We received our first grant from the Pickens Community Resource Association\, funded by the sales at The Community Thrift Store. \n\n\n\nFor this specific workshop\, we will focus on building a new in-ground garden. We will show you how to choose the right location\, how to remove what’s currently growing there\, if needed\, how to prep the soil with cardboard\, compost\, mulch\, etc. We will also teach you how to care for this garden and certain plants\, as far as watering\, feeding\, etc. \n\n\n\nNo experience necessary.All ages.This is a FREE EVENT.

DESCRIPTION:Edible Jasper Grows Again!Join us as we install a new Edible Jasper garden around the Community Thrift Store’s new sign.We will show you how lasagne-style garden-building works.  The soil around the sign is terrible – it’s impacted\, mostly clay\, and full of well-established grass.  We’ll build a thick barrier from recycled cardboard\, and then will add layers of leaf litter\, soil with compost\, and mulch.Plants to be added include rosemary\, lavender\, various thymes\, bee balm\, kale\, and more!Come help beautify our community with another sustainable\, edible garden\, meet new friends\, learn new things\, and get your hands dirty!  It’s good for you and for everyone else too! 🙂

SUMMARY:Edible Jasper Spring Planting
DESCRIPTION:Spring is here!  It’s time to get our hands dirty in the Edible Jasper gardens! \n\n\n\nWe have been growing lots of cold-tolerant plants to get started – pak choi\, chamomile\, dill\, swiss chard\, cabbage\, and more. \n\n\n\nFor this first Edible Jasper workshop of the season\, we’re going to start at our office.  We recently cleared out the shrubs from under the arbors\, so now they’re ready for some plants!  We have pak choi\, chamomile\, swiss chard\, dill\, hyssop\, blueberries\, and hardy kiwi to get started.  We will also relocate some of the plants from the road-side garden to under the arbors.   \n\n\n\nCome learn about sustainable plant selection\, how to split and relocate existing mature plants\, and we’ll explore the effects of this winter’s freeze on some of our plants (like our big mama rosemary) and how we plan to help them recover (if possible). \n\n\n\nThis is a drop-in event\, so if you can’t come for the entire time\, that’s fine! There’s plenty to do so come help when you can. \n\n\n\nSee you in the garden! \n\n\n\nApril is KPB’s Great American Cleanup month – We’ll have workshops and activities each weekend in April\, so come lend a hand\, improve our community\, meet new friends\, and have fun!

DESCRIPTION:Edible Jasper is adding Mushrooms to the Menu!\n\n\n\nJoin us as we learn how to inoculate logs to grow edible mushrooms! \n\n\n\nOur instructor for the day\, Gabrielle\, will teach us the technique\, the types of trees to use\, the best time to inoculate your logs\, and will answer all your mushroom questions. \n\n\n\nThis is an all-ages program\, but kids (younger than 15) must have a parent present.  We will be using hammers and hot wax\, so we want to keep everyone safe. \n\n\n\nSpace is limited\, so reserve your spot today! SUMMARY:Edible Jasper - Quinton Cabin garden prep
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we start the new herb garden behind the historic Kirby Quinton Cabin! \nThis project is kid-friendly since the garden spaces are away from traffic. \nCome for all or part of our workshop!  Your helping hands are appreciated for whatever amount of time you’re available. \nEdible Jasper is adding another garden!  This herb garden will be located behind the cabin\, and we will focus on including herbs and other plants for use by the local restaurants.  We have surveyed them to find which herbs they use in their kitchens\, and since this location is away from traffic and storm run-off\, it’s the perfect location! \nCome learn how to prep a grassy\, impacted space!  The location for the garden has been home to grasses and other ‘weeds’ for decades\, and the soil is extremely impacted.  On this date\, we will begin prepping the space for the herb garden.  And depending on how quickly we progress\, we’ll hopefully even get some plants in the ground! \nWhat does ‘prepping’ mean?  All the grass needs to be removed since we want to get this garden started now; digging will be needed by those who can.  Then we will amend the soil to improve it so we’ll have happy herbs and other plants.  So come get your hands dirty.  Get some exercise.  Meet new friends.  And have fun as we help Edible Jasper grow! \nDue to Covid safety protocols\, places are limited and we will be keeping space between our volunteers.  If we get a large team\, we may split into two groups because there is a bit more work to be done on the gardens in the Pickens Progress parking lot. \nLearn more about the historic Quinton cabin HERE from the Marble Valley Historical Society. \nNote: Complete one registration form per household.  If you are bringing friends\, please contact KPB to let us know how many people you are bringing.
