Publix Day of Service
The History
During the 2024 Great American Cleanup, Keep Pickens Beautiful partnered with CARES to build a garden with the goal that the produce grown would feed the families they serve. Fresh veggies are important components of a healthy diet, and they’re also some of the most difficult items for food banks and food pantries to distribute. According to a 2020 study by the NIH, “Identified challenges included regional variation in fresh produce availability, long transportation times, and lack of refrigerated storage.” (https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6957083/) If the produce is grown on site, those logistical issues are no longer challenges, and the community can not only have access to fresh veggies, but they can help in the garden and learn how to grow food for themselves.
The first growing season of the new garden was fruitful and educational. Shaun, who works at CARES and is instrumental in guiding the project, spent many hours watering the garden; it became clear that an irrigation system was needed. Also, the soil in the raised beds settled so they needed more soil and compost. And there were a variety of other needs to prepare for new plants and seeds.
Keep Pickens Beautiful has been serving Pickens County for almost 40 years, and a lot of ‘stuff’ has been accumulating. Near CARES, KPB has a small storage building to hold recycling bins, event displays and supplies, archival materials, and more. The building has no shelving; everything has been piled in a relatively organized way, but it has been getting increasingly chaotic as KPB’s activities have continued to grow.
The Project
When Jerry Meyer, the manager of the new local Publix, contacted KPB with the offer of 40-50 volunteers for a Day of Service, the CARES garden and storage building seemed like perfect projects. The Publix volunteers were incredible! So much was accomplished!
Much of the materials needed for the day were donated. The Pickens County Road Department delivered a mountain of mulch. Hall Brothers donated enough soil to top off all the beds, as well as start a potato bed and flower patches to draw pollinators. Prodew donated the water lines and fittings for all the beds, and the mist bars for under the ‘green tunnel.’ In addition to their team of volunteers, Publix also helped cover the cost of the materials that needed to be purchased since KPB operates on a tight budget. Everyone coming together made this day possible.
The Publix, CARES, and KPB volunteers built chases to run the water lines from bed to bed, added soil and compost to the beds, installed the mist bars, spread mulch, and even set the posts for the coming fence. At the KPB storage building, they removed all the items and cleaned out the space, built the sturdiest and most amazing loft to hold the archival materials, and helped put everything back in an organized way for better accessibility. Much was accomplished thanks to the hard work and productivity of the Publix team.
This year, in preparation for the nation’s 205th Anniversary, Keep America Beautiful has re-named the event the GREATEST American Cleanup. Let’s all work together to make a big impact!
