Keep Pickens Beautiful’s Community Corner

You may have noticed the little green cabin at the south end of Main Street.  That building has been the Keep Pickens Beautiful office for roughly 20 years.  Historically, it was staffed 2 days a week for 4 hours a day, but now that KPB’s projects and programs have been expanding, it’s staffed 5 days a week from 11am-3pm.  Stop by to say hello and learn about all KPB is doing for our community.

As we’ve been in the office more, we’ve realized that many people think that it’s an information booth.  In the warmer weather when the front window is open, it’s common for folks to poke their head in and ask for help.  We’ve directed tourists to local restaurants, helped new residents find the county office for car registrations, and enjoyed friendly chit-chat with the locals.

Over the past few years, we’ve been improving our corner.  We’ve installed Edible Pickens gardens along the road, pulled the ornamental shrubs from under the arbors, and expanded the edible gardens to the north side of the building. Now, we’re slowly working on repairing the rotted logs so we can repaint the building, and we’ve begun developing our Community Corner.

The vision for Community Corner is to create a greenspace on South Main where people can sit and visit with friends.  Just grab a coffee at Red Bean, an ice cream at Lollidrops, or a snack at 61 Main and enjoy a beautiful day in our gardens!  Also, since we already look like an info booth, we’re going to add a weather-proof rack for cards and leaflets so businesses on Main Street can share their literature.

The Atlantic Coast Conservancy has already helped us kick off the project. They donated the first piece of outdoor furniture for the Community Corner, a picnic table.  It has already seen a lot of use!  The KPB Team thanks the Atlantic Coast Conservancy for their generosity and for helping us to get a start on the project.

Additional items that will be added are two 6-foot benches and three Adirondack chairs.  We invite you to be a part of the project by sponsoring an item; be a part of Main Street!
