Cigarette Litter Prevention
Working Together to...
Keep Our Streets Butt Free!
In 2020, KPB purchased cigarette litter receptacles to provide to local businesses, free of charge, to help address the mess on Main Street.
In 2022, we were awarded a grant through Keep America Beautiful’s Cigarette Litter Prevention Program (CLPP).  Through this grant, we purchased 23 additional cigarette litter receptacles. These are now available for FREE to local businesses – first come, first served.
Complete the form at the bottom of this page to request a receptacle for your location.

About the KAB Cigarette Litter Prevention Program
The Cigarette Litter Prevention Program (CLPP), created by Keep America Beautiful® in 2002, is the nation’s largest program aimed at eliminating cigarette litter.
In the 2020 KAB National Litter Study, 9 out of 10 littered items counted were 4″ and less, with cigarette butts being the number one littered item in this category, accounting for 9.7 billion butts counted on any given day in the U.S.
The Cigarette Litter Prevention Program (CLPP), now in its 21st year, is the nation’s largest program aimed at reducing cigarette litter. Communities implementing a Cigarette Litter Prevention Program consistently reduce cigarette litter by half based on local measurements taken in the first four to six months after program is implemented. Since its inception, the program has been implemented in more than 1,800 U.S. communities.
An effective local Cigarette Litter Prevention Program includes four proven, field-tested solutions or strategies for reducing cigarette butt litter.
- Review local litter laws, including cigarette butt litter, and support enforcement.
- Raise awareness about the issue of proper cigarette butt disposal using messaging and marketing campaigns.
- Place ash receptacles at transition points to non-smoking area like beaches, hospitals, or public parks.
- Distribute pocket or portable ashtrays to adult smokers.
In 2022, Keep America Beautiful will focus on three primary types of intervention with a goal to increase cigarette butt recycling and to incorporate technology into the assessment and collection program. Applicants will have the opportunity to focus on cigarette litter reduction through messaging, infrastructure placement, or a combination of both.
What KPB Can Do For You
KPB is focused on helping to reduce waste and beautify our county. Cigarette butts are gross and they’re (unfortunately) everywhere. Through the CLPP grant, we bought receptacles to distribute for FREE to our community.
As part of the grant requirements, KPB will keep your containers cleaned out for a minimum of 5 years. We will collect the used butts and will send them to Terracycle to be recycled. Learn more about what Terracycle does with the used butts HERE.
To show the community that you care about the environment and the beauty of our county, we will add your logo to the containers, and we will include a photo and address on this page. Be a part of the anti-butt solution!
Recycling While Beautifying
Part of the installation process is adding sand to these receptacles both to weigh them down so they won’t blow away and to provide a fire-proof space for the cigarettes. Our local Pickens County Recycling Center crushes the glass they receive from the community, so we’re using that instead of sand! It’s a win-win solution!
