The Talking Rock Brewery and

The owners of the Talking Rock Brewery and Boxcar Grill approached us about helping with their new garden spaces. Of course we said yes!

The Brewery and Grill built the planter boxes and provided the soil and mulch. We provided the crushed glass, plants, and volunteers. Together, we built some new Edible Pickens gardens for the Talking Rock community!

These plants make the patio area so inviting, and hopefully the herbs will be eaten and enjoyed as they mature.

Happy in-ground garden beds!

The last of the mulch went around the plants in the in-ground garden beds.

We added the remaining plants to the in-ground spaces.

A permanent trellis will be added for the hops – for now, we hung the vines with string.

Plants include basil varieties, oregano varieties, mint varieties, lavender, hops, thyme varieties, yarrow, cosmos, cilantro, and more.

The Brewery and Grill can use these herbs in their cooking.

Roughly 100 plants were added to the garden spaces.

So many plants! It’s going to be such a happy garden!

Rain! Rain! Rain!

Other than the two lavender plants, no plants were purchased. They were donated or they came from other Edible Pickens gardens – our office, the Progress parking lot, and the Kirby Quinton Cabin.

All the plants included are edible, even the flowers.

Let the planting begin!

Time for the plants! First we placed them where we thought they should go.

The parking curbs were a challenge. The soil needed to get dropped on a tarp and then moved into the beds.

Mary and Mary – the master dirt-movers!

Mary brought a tractor to help with the soil-moving. Game changer!!

Rain break!

The in-ground beds have a nice, thick mulch base. This will break down over time to add nutrients and will aid with drainage.

Two of the three mulch piles are almost gone!

The soil was dropped far from the gardens so we began moving it by shoveling it into a trailer and driving it to the gardens. It was heavy!

The weather bounced between extreme downpours and bright sunshine.

We added 6-8 inches of mulch to the planters. This will break down over time to add nutrients.

Moving mulch can be fun when you move it with friends!

And we moved more mulch.

We moved a lot of mulch… rain or shine!

We then added a thick layer of mulch in the planter boxes on top of the glass, and we added a thick layer to the in-ground spaces because the dirt was compacted and full of clay and gravel.

We love that it’s recycled and crushed here in Pickens.

There is a minimum of 3 inches to help with drainage.

We spread the crushed glass in the bottom of the planter boxes.

…. and more mulch.

The planter boxes needed something in the bottom to help with drainage. We used crushed glass from the Pickens Recycling Center.

The Talking Rock Brewery lined their planter boxes and added bracing to keep them from bowing out over time.
