On Saturday, October 12, Keep Pickens Beautiful will host the first Trash-O-Lympics. Join in on the fun, get some exercise, feel great, and know that you’re helping our community.
Roadside litter is an ongoing challenge, so let’s work together to make a big difference. The Trash-O-Lympics will be a one-day, county-wide litter pick-up competition. This won’t be any ordinary cleanup event; we’re taking it to the next level! Trashlete Teams will compete for bragging rights and PRIZES.
This event is part of Keep America Beautiful’s Greatest American Cleanup campaign. This is a national initiative to clean up 25 billion pieces of litter and beautiful 25,000 communities across America for our country’s 250th birthday on July 4, 2026.
Here’s the day’s agenda:
- Teams will meet at a designated location to collect their gear at 9:30.
- The Trashletes will pick up as much trash as they can from 10:00 to 12:00.
- Everyone will meet in Jasper to get their bags counted at 12:30.
- The Trashy Cavalcade will head up Main Street to the Pickens Recycling Center for awards, food, and festivities.
Each Trashlete will each get:
- A Trash-O-Lympics t-shirt
- Tools for trash-collecting – gloves, grabber sticks, bags, and more
- Vouchers for a free meal from our food trucks at the Trash-O-Lympics Celebration – LC Tacos & Margaritas and Appalachian Raspados
- Participation prizes
The Gold, Silver, and Bronze winning teams will get CASH prizes!
Prize pots are still growing as sponsorships roll in, but at a minimum, each team will win:
Gold – $1000
Silver $500
Bronze – $250

To participate, you need a team of 4-6 people. Teams will be composed of:
- A driver with a vehicle large enough to carry the items your team collects
- A ‘safety’ monitor to watch for oncoming traffic
- 1-2 people to collect trash items
- 1-2 people to collect recyclables
If you don’t have a full team, register and the KPB staff will pair you with other Trashletes.
Getting involved and doing good things will make you feel great. Working together and meeting your neighbors helps to build community. Cleaning up our county benefits everyone. A bit of competition adds a whole new element of fun!
