Keep Pickens Beautiful has been having a very busy month with Great American Cleanup activities. With events planned for each weekend in April, they and the community volunteers who have joined them have already done a lot to help beautify Pickens, with more to come.
Since the start of April, KPB has hosted three Edible Jasper workshops – near their office at the south end of Main Street, with the Jasper Homeschoolers in their Memorial Garden in Lee Newton Park near the Chamber, and behind the Historic Kirby-Quinton Cabin at the north end of Main Street. With the mix of rain, sun, and cool temperatures, these gardens are so happy. Be sure to check them out, and please grab a nibble from any of the plants with KPB’s identifying labels.
Roadside trash is an ongoing challenge and two Pick-Up Pickens events are part of this month’s projects. Unfortunately the first was rained out; it will be rescheduled. The next cleanup is scheduled for Saturday, April 29. Join them to get some exercise, meet great folks, and do good things for your community.
Pickens County residents can still take their tires to the central recycling center on Appalachian Court – 4 tires per family for free throughout the month of April.
The big news is their Earth Day on Main celebration this Saturday, April 22 at their office. There are many exciting activities planned – there will be lots for the kids and adults to do!
For the kids, there will be:
- Create and decorate a birdfeeder from recycled water bottles
- Make wildflower seed bombs with Gabrielle from Earthbound Skills
- Decorate seed pouches to fill with marigold seeds for your garden
- And more is in the works J
And for the adults:
- Lots of information about KPB and all the things they do for the community, such as Adopt-A-Road, Edible Jasper, and much more
- A raffle with fun items donated by businesses in town such as a collapsible/camping glider chair from KPB, a beautiful tea set from the Hair Loft, a wash, cut, and dry from The Hair Loft, a variety of bird-feed-seed ‘ornaments’ from Clock Tower Gifts, a volcano spa pedicure from Victor Nails and Tan, a website or graphic design work from Veredesigns, an annual subscription from the Pickens County Progress, an egg carton garden from Bad Donkey, and more! Check their website for updates and photos.
- TWO FREE tomato plants and other fun swag with a KPB membership or renewal at the $25 level or above – support KPB to help them expand their projects and programs
- A plant ID guide with growing tips and uses for many of the plants growing in their Edible Jasper gardens for you to explore and learn
